New electrical goods waste laws enforced

The new WEEE regulations are being enforced through a series of telephone campaigns, targeting those businesses that have not yet signed up to take responsibility for their electrical waste.
Under the regulations companies are required to ensure their electrical waste goods are disposed of in an environmentally friendly and efficient way, and will be required to foot the bill.
New Biofuel plant planned

A new bio-ethanol and technology demonstration plant is being planned for Hull, supported by Association British Food and DuPont.
Each company involved will be contributing not only funding but their unique specialties in fuel markets, feedstock supplies and biotechnology.

The North West Regional Development Agency and the Forestry Commission are funding a project called Newlands - which aims to restore waste dumping grounds into a thriving woodlands and countryside areas accessible to members of the public as common shared areas.
Recycled compost reduces phosphorus in soil

International scientists have found that vegetables grown using inorganic fertilisers, poultry manure, and based in metropolitan areas, show high levels of phosphorus.
The research was carried out as part of a project to look at the benefits of using green recycled compost in gardens for growing vegetables. Although it was found that over time, additional sources of nitrogen might be required, overall the compost reduced the need for inorganic fertilisers and led to healthier soil.
Compost goes green for Compost Awareness Week

Compost Awareness Week earlier this month saw the UK raising awareness for green compost methods in the garden, and how this can help combat climate change worldwide. This week, run jointly by the Compost Association and the Waste & Resources Action Programme encourages the use of peat-free compost, made from recycled garden and kitchen waste - excess food waste and decomposable items.
