Householders must take care with organic waste fumes

A study in the Netherlands and an article in the New Scientist both warn that organic-only bins produce significantly more gases from decomposing waste than mixed-content bins. People storing their organic kitchen waste - such as banana skins, apple cores and potato leftovers - in badly ventilated kitchens could be damaged by breathing the resulting fumes, or find existing respiratory conditions such as asthma get worse. Studies found levels of beta-glucans in the mould found on organic waste in kitchens, which can cause lung and throat inflammation.

Council distributes free garden waste bins

This year, everyone in West Berkshire will be delivered free garden waste bins in an attempt to encourage recycling. Those with no space for bins or no garden can phone for the bins to be removed again, but otherwise everyone will be given a bin. A leaflet will accompany this freebie, with information on what people can recycle and how the project can help the environment.

World Environment Day 2008

This year World Environment Day was hosted by New Zealand, and the focus was “Kick the CO2 Habit”. The message was to reduce CO2 usage and therefore help with cutting down global warming contributions. It is hoped that individual households will analyse their needs for driving and other carbon-producing activities, and use the day as reminder to do what we can for the environment.

Green waste threatens reserve

Despite being something we are used to encouraging, composting can also threaten our environment it seems. A school in County Durham is making a case to protect a local nature reserve that they use regularly for educational trips and days out, and was granted an award at the 2007 National Teaching Awards ceremony.
