New composting facility in Devon

A fifth facility in the UK for dealing with in-vessel composting has been built in Devon and offers a drive-through system for vans to dump rubbish at one end and collect at the other. A roof provides a closed-in composting area for fast decomposition, and the compost is planned for use in a big landfill restoration effort.

Annette Dentith, the principal waste management officer for Devon, commented: “We are pleased with the performance of the plant and are optimistic that not only will the composting rates for the local authorities involved increase significantly, enabling statutory targets to be met and indeed exceeded, but that a useful product will be created for a variety of long term uses.”
