Mixed plastics can be recycled efficiently

Although most recycling centres accept drinks bottles and milk bottles, mixed plastics cannot be accepted. This accounts for a vast amount of the plastic we use - including disposable lunch containers, salad pots and frozen-food packaging. Research has been under way to ascertain whether mixed-plastic recycling can be done efficiently.

Wrap (The Waste Recycling & Action) have come up with information showing that this kind of recycling can be done efficiently, and may even save £200m in landfill taxes and manufacturing.

The industry now faces the task of putting money into mixed-plastic recycling facilities. Previously, councils have not collected this kind of plastic due to the lack of facilities, and facilities have not arisen due to the lack of materials being collected. With this new research, we must hope that either the facilities or the councils will take the first step and invest some money into getting this started.
