Green waste threatens reserve

Despite being something we are used to encouraging, composting can also threaten our environment it seems. A school in County Durham is making a case to protect a local nature reserve that they use regularly for educational trips and days out, and was granted an award at the 2007 National Teaching Awards ceremony.

A company with premises that border the reserve has now proposed plans to deal with composting green waste, and the chairman of the Crow Trees heritage group (responsible for the reserve) are worried that this will effect the quality of the soil in the area and eventually render the area damaged.

An independent ombudsman is expected to come to a verdict, as the council has a share in the company putting forward these plans. In depth assessments of the potential impact the composting may have is expected to be carried out before a decision is made.
