Compulsory WEEE recycling?

A report from the European Recycling Platform has revealed that 61% of producers and 59% of local authorities believe householders should be legally obligated to recycling their electrical waste. They are in favour of a compulsory WEEE recycling, meaning penalties would be in place fo residential households not recycling or reusing all electrical items.

ERP’s geenral manager admitted that he wasn’t sure it was the best idea, and that perhaps a push towards education was a better place to start. Rsearch in the field previously, has shown that many individuals are more than willing to recycle when give a clear and easy way to do so.

Understanding of the WEEE ligislation among the general population is not terribly high, and with better education, and a more accessible program of recycling, we can expect to see some significant changes over the next few years, and hopefully sooner.
