Waste export regulations
Ireland is clamping down on waste exports from the country with a new set of regulations designed to encourage more responsible waste treatments. The new regulations, entitled Transfrontier Shipments, came into effect on July 12th, and hopes to deal with the 83 percent of waste that is exported out of the country for disposal every year.
The regulations deal with both hazardous and non-hazardous waste being shipped abroad, and will ensure that Ireland-based companies and exporters take responsibility for the environmental impact their waste will have on the countries where disposal takes place.
Recently, illegally shipped waste was returned to Ireland and dealt with, as part of the new tightening laws and checks all waste exports are submitted to. The Dublin Country Council has been placed in charge of regulating the new rules, along with a budget of £337,000 to aid the new steps.
