New electrical goods waste laws enforced

The new WEEE regulations are being enforced through a series of telephone campaigns, targeting those businesses that have not yet signed up to take responsibility for their electrical waste.

Under the regulations companies are required to ensure their electrical waste goods are disposed of in an environmentally friendly and efficient way, and will be required to foot the bill.

Some smaller businesses have still not registered for the scheme, possibly because of unfamiliarity with the requirements of the scheme, or a reluctance to take on extra expenses. The telephone campaign hopes to nudge these companies into action, and increase awareness of the regulations and how smaller companies can get help with costs.

“We want to help make sure businesses are complying with the new rules,” said Liz Parkes, the agency’s head of waste. “However if we find a business has flouted the rules and deliberately avoided registering, we will take enforcement action.

“These regulations are about protecting our environment and it’s important that everyone plays their part.”
