WEEE went live July 1st
The latest Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment directive has gone live, solidifying the changes meaning that electronics manufacturers are now obliged to foot costs for disposal and recycling of their products, right through to the end of their use.
The recycling industry as a whole has welcomed the new directive, although some worry that smaller IT companies will suffer from the added costs of dealing with electronics waste disposal. More education into the new ligislations may be required to ensure that smaller businesses do not fall victim to extra costs.
Overall though, the Directive has been received with a sigh of relief from the industry, after a series of failed release dates reaching back as far as 2005.
