Industrial wasteland reformed

The North West Regional Development Agency and the Forestry Commission are funding a project called Newlands - which aims to restore waste dumping grounds into a thriving woodlands and countryside areas accessible to members of the public as common shared areas.

Moston Vale in Manchester was first to benefit from this new project a few years ago, and images of the area look encouragingly green. Solar-powered lighting lines the paths snaking through the area, and woodland and sporting areas are part of the overall work. Five sites such as this have already benefited from the project.

The NWDA commented, “This project will give the derelict land a re-birth and show that if you improve an area esthetically, that you can improve its status and boost development.”

The initial £23 million funding has recently been extended, and the budget also includes money for maintainance up to 15 years after the work.
