Regulations crack down on waste exports

Waste export has always been a tightly regulated process, in order to try and prevent wealthy countries using others as virtual waste-bins, and to ensure waste gets dealt with as effectively as it normally would in its country of origin.

Regulations have recently been stepped up, however, with Parliament setting forward new Transfrontier Shipment Of Waste Regulations 2007, with new and harsher penalties for irresponsible waste export practices.

These new rulings allow regulators to ask for more detailed information on the content of exported waste shipments, as well as where it is going and what will be done with it on arrival at its destination.

Regulators have also been given the power to block suspect exporters, and seize waste shipments if they deem it necessary.

These new rulings come into place on July 12th, and bring the UK into line with recent European waste export requirements
