Big-league companies join fight to reduce packaging waste

Some of the biggest manufacturers have signed up for the Government-backed project to take responsiblity for the packaging waste their products produce. Companies such as Coca-Cola and Nestle have put their names down for the Courtauld Commitment packaging reduction agreement.

The agreement aims to half packaging waste growth within a year, and reduce the waste by 2010.

The programme will mean consumers carrying less packaging home from the market, putting less packaging into their bins, and therefore saving not only waste but space too.

Companies, and organisations such as the Food & Drink Federation are embracing the project with enthusiasm, Melanie Leech says, “FDF members are working proactively with their food chain partners to minimise packaging, reduce food waste and increase recycling as a sustainability priority.

“I am delighted to see that more of our members have now decided to support the Courtauld Commitment joining Heinz and Unilever that did so last year.”

With the average consumer fighting against high levels of unecessary plastics every day, this is a major step in aiding efficiency in waste recycling in the home and in the industry at large.
